The culture of fat-shaming: A discussion with Ali Moeen Nawazish

I've written extensively about the society's attitude towards fat people. Seemingly harmless jokes and unsolicited weight-loss advice often has serious, negative impact on the lives of individuals experiencing weight problem.

I sat down with academic prodigy Ali Slim Forte Moeen Nawazish, to go over the issue of fat-shaming and body image.

Do you consider shaming people for their weight as something perverse?

Definitely. Just judging anyone by not their actions, however the way they appear, they sound, they speak; the entire concept of judging people according to these arbitrary things is perverse.

Have you personally been a target of fat-shaming, or suffered from poor self-image?

Since I had been a child, it's been there. I think it helped when I did my O' levels and visited Cambridge. The 3 years which i put in Cambridge, it had been never really a problem. I forgot even taking into consideration the fact that I was somewhat different, or didn't comply with society's expectation of what I ought to seem like. Even at Columbia, it is the same task. It's refreshing. But through senior high school, yeah, it was pretty bad.

Inform us about some of the efforts you have made to enhance your physique, and also to what extent had you been successful?

I did previously visit the Pindi race track every morning for any run. I played squash quite a bit, still do sometimes. I joined a fitness center for quite some time, and I've always prioritised my health. I had been actually quite active.

And (because of these efforts) my health did improve. My cholesterol is fairly normal. My resting heart rate is nice, even though exercising I can maintain my heart rate below (a level that) my trainer says is also very good.

For me, it certainly is been about my health, you know? It's never been about using a six-pack. I've accepted, to some extent, that there's not a way I'm going to look a certain way. Because to do that, I'd have to put a hold on a lot of things I actually do in life.

"Being fat is really a choice". What's your opinion of this statement?

Hmm, it is a option for some people, but not everybody. Many people do deliberately gain weight to maybe "look healthier" or whatever, however, many do as much as they can to shed weight and are not able to. Remember, it is also a lot about metabolism, and thus many other stuff that you as a doctor would know better? You will find metabolic disorders, and thyroid conditions that cause you to fatter?

It's true.

Right. So Yeah, if you aren't doing anything, then being fat is a choice. However i don't think it is a choice in most cases. And even when it's, it's a choice you're making (for yourself), yet others should be able to respect that.

What would you say to a person who considers a fat joke as 'harmless fun'?

The sad part is the fact that the majority of our humour is addressed at making fun of somebody. We have a jugat-bazi culture, and fat individuals are easy targets for like several jugats (slams) on the planet. When individuals do this, they have to realise there is Zi Xiu Tang a big likelihood that they are hurting someone's feelings. That doesn't mean they don't have a feeling of humour; at some point, it simply becomes too much.

It's like asking what you think of jokes about people with ugly faces, or perhaps a person with one arm. Jokes (that make fun of people's appearances) are pathetic to begin with.
