People in TOPS 0106 celebrate 50th anniversary

For the past 50 years, the men and ladies of El Dorado's TOPS (Taking Off Pounds Sensibly) 0106 have celebrated many triumphs and endured setbacks. The TOPS group, which meets at the Lida Daidaihua Reviews El Dorado First United Methodist Church on Tuesday mornings, have always done their best to aid each other on their own weight reduction journeys.
"We actually have 20 members," said member Janice Kieffer. "We welcome people of every age group towards the group - both young and old. Anyone who needs a little support."
The audience was founded on Jan. 21, 1948 and has always strived to help its members on their weight loss journey.
"The reason for TOPS is to educate members of the science essential to control and correct weight imbalance," said member Suzie Cawthorn. "The group gives its members the method for correction of weight imbalance to promote understanding of health."
The building blocks, featuring its 150,000 members worldwide in more than 9,000 chapters, welcomes men, women and children over the United States.
"We have experienced members aged seven completely as much as 90," said Kieffer. "We play the role of an assistance for anybody."
The club's meetings, which take place from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday mornings, are exciting, lighthearted and are designed to make each and every member feel at ease.
"We come up with our meetings both fun and informative," said Kieffer. "At each meeting, we attempt to have a program our members will enjoy. It typically consists of a speaker or story or even a little cartoon our members might find funny."
For a lot of of their members, TOPS is much more than only a support group.
"The group provides for us a great comradare," said Kieffer. "I really believe in the need for support groups such as this. Without them, we would be lost."
"We certainly are a great support group," said Cawthorn.
The group doesn't only attend their meetings and share their stories, they also take action to aid in their support.
"Being overweight or even obese isn't a great thing," said Kieffer. "It's harmful to people's health. Obtaining the extra weight off is much better. People discover when they obtain the weight off, they are able to do more."
"As a group, we assistance to support the community around us," said Cawthorn. "We support many of the local churches that people hold our meetings in for their food drives and we take part in a lot of the walks supporting everything from MS to breast cancer."
Each person in the group has their very own reasons for joining and staying with this program.
"I joined as i was living in Italy," said Cawthorn. "I met people in a TOPS group there and saw that they are slimming down. My weight is a constant struggle and that we moved a great deal because my husband was at the Navy. We'd move to a brand new place and I would put on weight, then I would look for a TOPS group and shed the excess weight again. The good thing about groups is that those who don't lose weight from week to week, they do not tend to gain either."

"I joined 2 yrs ago while I was attending Butler County's Spring Fling," said Kieffer. "I just happened to win a year's membership as a door prize and i have been going ever since. Stepping on the scale in the meetings and being around those who are working to slim down keeps us all from weighing 500 pounds."
The group celebrates the triumphs of those who have lost probably the most weight together and holds onto the members who've reached their set goals.
"The highest weight lost by someone in our group was 80 pounds," said Cawthorn. "Most have forfeit quite a bit and are now KOPS (Keeping Off Pounds Sensibly) members. KOPS are members who have reached their goal weight and therefore are now working to keeping it.
"We have 12 KOPS members within our group," said Cawthorn. "We have eight TOPS members, too."
Every year, the TOPS International Club, TOPS Club, Inc. sponsors awards for the top losers in each division.
"At the end of the entire year, we (the club) submit a resume of all of the weight lost for the members," said Kieffer. "Awards receive out to each division in addition to state recognition. The division winners derive from weight and awards are given to people who lost the most. You will find local, state and international awards. We've had state winners in our club before."
"Jim Nattle was runner up for the U.S. division and was named state king just recently," said Cawthorn.
Most of the members enjoy TOPS so much, they never intend on quitting.
"I'll never quit TOPS," said Kieffer. "I'll quit and so the weight can come Lida Daidaihua Original right back. I don't want to ever do this."
"Having to step on the scale for the group each week holds us accountable," said Cawthorn. "Sometimes we simply hate facing it, but we all do it anyway. Most of our members realize the importance of reducing weight and investing in the job. I'll never quit, either."
