"Stick with smaller, more direct goals," said Lauren Ryan, a journalism student and personal trainer at Spa Lady in Westbrook Mall.

Ryan suggested only drinking coffee once every other morning, instead of every single day.

"I begin to see the most difference from the little things. When [clients] start achieving those goals, it makes them want to do more," said Ryan.

Exercising is the obvious technique for losing weight, and there are a wide array of choices for SAIT students.

Gauvreau and Ryan both recommend combining weight lifting and cardio.

"I would try to bang it off with high intensity interval training workouts (HIIT)," said Ryan.

A typical workout she puts her clients through commences with intense on a bike for just one minute, then moves them to weight lifting with little to no time of rest.

"Keep heart rate high, keep sweating, that's when you are going to burn probably the most calories," said Ryan.
