Going gluten-free continues to be a controversal health topic


Gluten has been the target of special diets recently, from people hoping to lose weight to those identified as having celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder that causes gluten to break the little intestine.
But with no confirmed medical diagnosis, knowing if slim forte capsule your gluten-free weight loss program is a good choice for you and your family can be a difficult decision.
Gluten, a protein in grain, can be found in many breads, cereals and other common grain-based products.
"Usually, when people are referring to a gluten-free diet, they're talking about the gluten that is in wheat, barley and rye. It's in contaminated oats, too, which may be processed on a single equipment or grown within the same fields," says Sheri Caldwell, registered dietician at Hy-Vee.
Celiac and gluten sensitivity
Celiac disease is a medically diagnosed type of negative reaction to gluten.
When the body makes connection with gluten, it causes the body to attack the little intestine. Nutrients can't be absorbed into the body properly, be responsible for anemia, osteoporosis, migraines and intestinal cancers if left untreated. Additionally, it can cause stomach pains, bloating and gas. Currently, a gluten-free diet is the only real strategy to coeliac disease.
Celiac disease is diagnosed with a blood test or biopsy from the small intestine. Approximately one percent of the population has coeliac disease, based on the Celiac Disease Foundation.
Non-celiac gluten sensitivity, which does not make the same kind of harm to the small intestine as celiac disease, is thought to become much more common than coeliac disease.
"For every one person who has celiac, eight people test negative for celiac, but still have symptoms or report they feel better after going off gluten," Ms. Caldwell says, citing research by Dr. Tom O'Bryan from the Gluten Summit.
Non-celiac gluten sensitivity may cause symptoms much like coeliac disease, including gastrointestinal issues, headaches, joint pain and numbness. It is generally recognized as more gentle than celiac disease but can still cause daily discomfort. Avoidance, or trial-and-error, could possibly be the best test to determine a non-celiac gluten sensitivity.
"I think what a person needs to do, should they have questions, or suspect they're having health issues, they need to look for medical health advice to obtain further testing and much more information," Ms. Caldwell says.
The digestive system plays most in all around health, Ms. Caldwell says, so it's vital that you search for root reasons for problems rather than only treating symptoms.
"So a lot of our immune system is in our digestive tract, so whenever someone is having health problems, we have to return to their digestive tract and check out what else must be healed there to put them in an optimal place for health," she says.
Non-medical gluten-free diets
Based on the Gluten Intolerance Group of North America, around 24 percent of people wants gluten-free foods, higher than the proportion of people identified as having coeliac disease or non-celiac gluten sensitivity.
While advertised recently in an effort to lose weight, research has shown that the gluten-free diet alone does not generally help with weight reduction. Some gluten-free products might have more calories and fat than gluten counterparts.
Depending on the brand, a slice of gluten-free bread can have 20 to 30 more calories and up to twice as much fat as a comparable slice of wheat bread. Some gluten-free products also lack B vitamins, calcium, iron, zinc and magnesium, all found in gluten products.
However, as part of an overall healthy diet, reducing gluten-containing products and increasing lean proteins vegetables and fruit, can equal weight loss. Many processed, high-calorie, low-nutrient foods contain gluten, which can result in weight loss if they're eliminated and replaced with fresh, nutrient-dense foods.
"You will find food to construct your diet plan around -- a lot of vegetables ... meat, high-quality meats and healthy fats, and just what you are able to tolerate," Ms. Caldwell says. "That's exactly what a lot of people who have gluten-free diets change to. It's returning to more whole-foods."
Living gluten-free
She often gets questions about gluten-free diets and gluten-free foods, Ms. Caldwell says.
Gluten-free products include premade products like granola bars, pasta, bread, pizza and cereal, and substitution products such as gluten-free flours that can be used in recipes instead of gluten products. More restaurants are starting to provide gluten-free items, too.
"Many seem to be very comparable," Ms. Caldwell says. "Some are very different. I usually tell people you have to test out your recipes a little bit. ... You usually just have to check it out and see what works for you. There are plenty of good options."
Flax, corn and cornmeal, quinoa, rice, sorghum and soy are gluten-free grains, although it is possible they could are exposed to trace levels of gluten during packaging.
To ensure a totally gluten-free product, Ms. Caldwell recommends searching for a "certified gluten-free" label. Products with the "GF" label, controlled through the Gluten Intolerance Group, are certified as gluten-free with the independent, 3rd party company.
On average, gluten-free products tend to be more expensive than their gluten counterparts. British researchers found in a 2011 study that gluten-free products were between 76 and 518 percent higher.

With no definitive medical diagnosis, knowing if a gluten-free diet is beneficial may take learning from mistakes and patience. Ultimately, it comes down to the person, Ms. Caldwell says.
"(Grains are) often considered a standard feature of life," she says, "but if your is sensitive to it and it is making you have health issues, then it's harmful to you."
